What @Ezekiel_Balderdash and also the idea that the sand could damage the joints or motors if the bushings leak.
Really you would be better off mixing in some mercury too. The robots are probably made with a aluminium and mercury damages aluminium.

Most attempts to quickly remove it will scratch up the optics.
