A small gasoline engine would be more efficient.
but the HP is going to require electricity from the battery to keep it warm to get better range.
why can we just admit EVs are complete shit at the moment for anything more than local transportation? around town or deliveries within 100 miles (100 out and 100 back) is reasonable, but our current battery tech FUCKING BLOWS.
we need to increase storage capacities before long range EVs make any sense. EVs and ICE have their place, but this all out assault on ICEs when they make 10X more sense in most situations is laughably retarded, which does make sense since our world is exclusively controlled by retards and kid fuckers.
The problem is that getting these vehicles to do simple things like "work in cold weather" is a challenge to begin with. And they still haven't figured put how to tow without losing all range, work for a full day of driving, or build an electric minivan.
Their pipedream of replacing all gas powered vehicles with electric conveniently ignores the fact that there isn't a solution, much less an affordable one, for all vehicles.
A buddy of mine owns a business with at least a dozen work vans that are out for at least 10 hours a day on jobs hauling stuff and going from site to site. He sat in on a meeting where politicians were asking business owners how long it would take to replace all their vehicles with electric. To them, this was a forgone conclusion, and they just wanted to know what date to put in a bill for mandatory compliance.
He told them he'll never be able to afford to replace his vans because the electric vehicles can't haul as much or be in use all day without charging. And even if he bought extra vehicles and hired more people to get through a whole workday, he'd have to triple or quadruple what he charges. Effectively he'd be out of business unless someone else picked up at least 80% of the cost of the EVs.
No reasonable person would want legislation to force EVs on anyone, we're all free to choose what we want to drive. If EVs end up being the primary mode of transportation it should be because they make what they replace obsolete. Even so there will still be plenty of classic car folks always maintaining vintage vehicles.
The market is working just fine. People will buy EVs if the economics and logistics make sense for their situation, and they are. Politicians talk about "saving the planet," but we all know they don't give a shit about that. If they really, truly wanted everyone to drive EVs they'd make electricity so cheap that the economics of it would basically force everyone to do it. But that's not what they want. They want to give a big Christmas present to their friends in the auto and utility industries so they just mandate people buy more of their friend's product.
Good luck with this -- with the propaganda, I mean. You go, Tesla. Keep slinging that snake oil. But it won't make electric cars work in cold weather.
They work fine in cold weather. People just use a lot of power on heating when it's cold. A lithium battery at -4° has 60% of the capacity it has at 70°.
There's no possible way this doesn't cut into the range. Perhaps not as much as the cold does without it, but still.
Electric cars are shit.
