Gas powered vehicles in the Mad Max series are also implausible in the long run. Though Gas Town was a thing, it was a very simplified and rudimentary version of petroleum refining. While it is possible to refine crude oil in a crude manner, the fuels and oils produced would be very poor and full of engine destroying impurities. That would make for short lived engines despite them being simple and repairable.

The single distillation tower Gas Town had would not produce much product and it would be limited to only certain distillates which may not do anyone any good. They had no significant storage capacity for either crude oil or refined product so their capacity would have been meager at best. Lubrication oils would be really bad quality and would lead to early engine death for sure. Also, the engines would eventually need gaskets and other rubber/elastomer materials which would not be easy to produce.

It's just a car lover's masturbatory fantasy to think that any vehicles powered by something other than animals would have longevity post-apocalypse. Reality would prove their dreams to be nothing more than badly refined gas-powered dreams.

Edit: missed a word (tower)
