Could it not be that the AI isn't sentient, he knows it isn't sentient, but he also knows that it looks convincing enough that brainlet journos would spend a couple news cycles debating it and in the meanwhile greatly increasing his own fame as an "AI expert"?
As for him being fired, I really don't get how that proves anything. If I had a bunch of nerds wageslaving for me to build some chatbot so I could fire what's left of my underpaid customer service department, and then instead of doing the job I'm paying them $$$ to do they start waxing poetic in the press about some philosophical bullshit (that doesn't make me any MONEY) I'd give them the boot too.
