Bitcoin circulated for 18 months with zero value. Meanwhile there wasn't any other coin in development. But once Bitcoin started getting valuable the copycats came. Litecoin and namecoin didn't come until 2011 when Bitcoin had aleady achieved dollar parity. Every other coin is a scam.
