Companies are complicit as well. They could always push back and say come back with a court order. They don't do this. They specifically work with law enforcement and set up this "streamlined" process. It's supposed to be used only for matter of life and death, but it wouldn't surprise me if more and more requests become a "matter of life and death". Cops can ask for your data without a warrant and get it, so why would they even bother going through the trouble of getting a court order?
