They can last longer with careful charging, which is how electric cars last 10 years instead of 2. They never actually charge or discharge completely. You can do the same thing with your phone -- sacrificing the use of some capacity in favor of battery life. IDK if it works for 10 years, but it dramatically slows down the aging of the battery. I agree with you, though. Making everything battery powered is dumb.
