Agreed. Just a way to shut your water off for whatever "reason" they care to use.

Insurance companies look for any excuse to NOT pay out.

Insurance has always been a fucking scam.

Would you go to a grocery store and pay up front for 6 months worth of groceries that you MIGHT buy in the future? Would you go to a car dealer and start making payments every 6 months for a car or truck you MIGHT buy in the future?

Because that's what you're doing with "insurance". You're paying a huge fee for something that may NEVER HAPPEN! You're essentially gambling that you'll lose instead of win.

My electric company offers a discount if I let them put IOT cutoffs on my HVAC and hot water, so they can cut power to them during periods of excess demand. I haven't signed up.

Other people allowing those helps prevent blackouts, and keep rates lower because peak demand costs a lot. With mine it just adjust the temperature, which you can adjust back if you're home. Many people keep their HVAC on unnecessarily when they're away at work. And if you really need to stop their control, just turn off your WiFi.

75% of "leaks" are water from toilet, showers, and roofs infiltrating where they are not supposed to, but there is the occasional burst pipe and those can get ugly.

That said, having a cloud based plumbing system is 100 uglier

Why do they need to be IOT? These are nothing new and most plumbing companies will give you one with their logo on it when you do your hot water system. Theyre ten bucks at the hardware store.
