I'm looking to get a home NAS in replacement to an old prebuilt server. I want to be on all the time and quiet.

I'm looking at either getting a 4 bay synology or 4 bay Asustor locker.

I don't want to build my own right now. I want this to sit quietly in the living room not suck up a lot of power.

What about a raspberry pi with samba? You can install the OS on a ssd 2 or 3 TB SSD hard drive. That's what I did, anyway...

Another good choice. I suggested a USB drive dock with a DD-WRT router that has USB.

What's nice about these solutions is you can use the individual devices for other things if necessary ad hoc or in future applications.
