Hit or miss with Synology. Had one that lasted for years and another that quietly died after less than a year.
I don't like Synology devices. I just don't like the OS setup/layout and there's been quality issues. I think Asustor and QNAP have better OS GUIs and haven't heard of hardware quality issues.
I'm currently sitting next to one, and it is pretty loud. Having said that, it was sitting in the equivalent of a shed for who knows how long...
truenas.
is open source. raid 6 zfs for the win.
you can even buy pre-built ones directly from the truenas company on Amazon.
What about a raspberry pi with samba? You can install the OS on a ssd 2 or 3 TB SSD hard drive. That's what I did, anyway...
Another good choice. I suggested a USB drive dock with a DD-WRT router that has USB.
What's nice about these solutions is you can use the individual devices for other things if necessary ad hoc or in future applications.
Open-source! FreeNAS used to be decent I think. I haven't looked at it in a long time.
edit: Sorry I didn't read that you don't want to make your own Open Source would not be the way.
I did that awhile back with an old desktop. Those things are on all the time. I even thought of getting the official truenas but it is power hungry.
I want plex, nas, quiet, and low power. The adjustors as6604t and the synology ds930+ are about the same cost and do what I want.
The hardware consumes power, not the OS. My FreeNAS machine is silent and idles at less than 20W.
The os doesn't use power? Wow. Lol
I'm not really looking for a major project of specing everything out then building. I also don't want a raspberry pi nas or having to look up every compatibility sheet.
Im ok with my synology here at work.I use it for a backup copy job for redundancy. Stays on and hasnt failed, thats all i need.
The asustor is growing fast in yhe industry but synology software is great. Asustor has 2.5 gig ports too. I've used synologies for the last 8 years but not sure anymore.
Go to the Goodwill and find a router with USB ports that can be flashed to DD-WRT. https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/ Get a USB 4 bay SATA dock. See if this one would work by asking the DD-WRT forums or IRC or something. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Drive-Docking-Station-DS-4SSD/dp/B0711L68MS Follow the simple instructions. https://www.bestbackups.com/dd-wrt-nas/
I've had a 4 bay Synology DS410J for well over a decade, seems fine
I really only use it for archiving really old stuff, but apparently you can run various apps on this thing, stream from it and record one IP camera for free.
I'd probably be better off with a freeNAS box, but this saves me from thinking too much about it. Having a device that isn't proprietary, where you can over-spec the power supplies quality, seems like a big plus for the DIY route.
I've noticed people recommend getting the correct NAS hard drives, like IronWolf Red. I used some really old 500Gb enterprise drives in this and they've been fine. If possible get them with different manufacturing dates, then if there is a glitch it's slightly less likely that two will fail at the same time. I've added a proper mains filter (not the low spec extension cord types).
I'd put it someone other than the living room, it's a network drive so it can sit anywhere, find somewhere that is cool and dust free. I think you can get this to power down when it's not needed.
Awesome.
I do enough technical stuff that I don't want to think to much about this thing. I've done the freenas route was fun but I'm not looking for a project.
Qnap isn't bad either.
