Will it really reduce fuel costs by 10%? If so, I don't see the problem. If it's retarded, but it works, it's not retarded.

If you can automate the rigging, you won't need to occupy the crew, it would be "free" propulsion (minus maintenance costs for the sail, motors, and computers, of course).

For that matter, why don't we have automated sailboats that deliver goods across the ocean?
