Will this cause a regress in progression or just a pause? Even if these chips were completely eliminated at this point, the furthest back it would put us in technology is around the 1990s.

Time to dust off the old pager.

The R&D portion of chip-making probably won't be affected, but I can see this making it harder to get new technology out into the wild.

I'm exaggerating of course, but I do think society needs to be less dependent on this shit. I'm old enough to remember Y2K and knew then that we were fucked if the system breaks. We have only become more dependent on machines since then.

While I find nothing wrong with technology, it has created a generation of idiots that don't understand the metal doohicky at the end of their keyfob will unlock the door when the battery in the fob is dead.

Considering the level of automation in chip manufacturing and electronics, it doesn't make sense that it has to be overseas.

It's not so much the automation/labor costs, it's the environmental costs. Some of these places, you don't need to worry about pesky things like "oops, we spilled dangerous, deadly chemicals."

I'm sure tax considerations come into that play as well.

More consumers need to be aware of this.
