Good old government enforced monopolies.
>allowing people to re-use existing chargers and cables when they buy new electronics>>
I have 1 fucking thing that takes usb-c. So what the fuck is the drawer full of usb-A cables if not waste? How am i going to “reuse” those?
Tie them together and use them to hang a local degenerate from the biggest tree you can find.
The year is 2341.
Everyone is dying because their mandatory surgically implanted USB-C ports can't handle the data transmission rates required to keep up with the mRNA vaccine protocols needed to adapt to the rapidly mutating Corona Kappa Sigma Series
This is something about the EU that is actually good. An example of how this has helped consumers a lot is that every TV sold in the EU has a SCART interface so you can hook any TV up to any video device in full RGB with the right cable.
No it isn't. Their goal is control.
I for one like to have complete control over the consumer electronics I purchase. I don't like it when the manufacturer locks me out of certain built-in features unless I purchase additional equipment. And I don't like it when the manufacturer deliberately makes hooking up certain accessories difficult or impossible without purchasing their specific accessories.
The SCART requirement is a great example. SCART is way more consumer-friendly than HDMI because it doesn't have built-in industry-wide standardized hardware DRM such as HDCP-lock.
Don't forget, the corporations want to control you just as much as any tinpot dictator would.
True you have a point. I really wish RGB was adopted here by the early companies like RCA, or Sony. But instead of SCART, I would prefer straight BNC connectors to each signal, or simply use VGA.
But we aren't living in those times, they used earlier regulations to do things right, to hook you into accepting regulations. Over the years they slowly incorporated control into the regulations, now they do it for pure control.
What's the point of doing this when there will likely be a new USB connector in some years? Imo, it is about control. This is the bait.
Manufacturers should all use the same CPU, display, case, color, connectors, radios and other internal components to cut down on waste. I also think all countries should adopt 110 volts AC 50 Hz power to avoid having to buy adapters.
Ah, the slippery slope fallacy. I think this is a good thing, annoying as fuck having different chargers for everything but no benefits
Not a fallacy. It's incrementalism to communism. You see it all the time. First there were smoking sections, then entire spaces. First it was 2 weeks staying home, then 2 years. Next masks, next graphene spike protein shots, next "booster" shots, next passports, next mandates. It never ends.
You don't need a vaccine if you don't want to. Smoking sections? Seriously?
110AC pwr is a waste & expensive to create & maintain,The US chooses to ignore the rest of the World's pwr.voltage, due to some misplaced admiration for Tom Edison. Foolish,is what it is.
Homes in the US are fed what's called split-phase 220VAC, operating at a superior 60Hz. The phase is split at the step-down transformer, meaning you have an extra piece of wire that runs to the residence.
There's no waste or expense save that extra wire and tap on the transformer, everything else is just cable. You could just as easily feed 220VAC on the outlets in a USA home, if you had said desire - the copper ROMEX doesn't care. Most switching supplies don't give a shit either, they'll run on pretty much anything from 90-250VAC, 50-400Hz.
110 allowed us to do things that Europe could only dream of in the early days, including making radio cheap for the masses by directly heating the series string in a receiver and removing the expense of a power transformer. At this point, there's absolutely no reason to change, all the power hungry appliances are 220 anyway.
You are possibly an electrician. A bird of science and history for sure
Thank You, So sick of transplanted euros trying to pretend the electrical system in the US is backwards because it isn't the way they do it back home. You might save a couple bucks on copper, but you waste it on insulation. Jesus Christ! these guys have master degrees in engineering but that white wire is baffling.
misplaced admiration for Ben Franklin
Thomas Edison, not Benjamin Franklin you dumbass. You're off by over 100 years.
It was actually George Westinghouse, Edison was a big fan of DC which was not a practical distribution method.
My beer soaked brain told me B.F.:Thanks for the correction.
No. The rest of the world can fuck off.
Also based Japanese use 100V 50Hz.
Only part of the nation uses 50hz, the other part uses 60hz. So much for Japans shining example. https://shulman-advisory.com/2020/02/28/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-japanese-electricity-grid/
Are you saying 220 volts is better? It doesn't require as much copper, I suppose. Then the issue is, should we use split phase, single phase, 2 phase power. Then there is the frequency 50 hz or 60 hz. Changing to 50 hz would be problematic because many devices use the line frequency to lock the speed of rotating shafts.
