Peloton has removed “Just Run” from its treadmills, a feature that allows Peloton treadmill owners to just run without any subscription.

The removal of the free feature pretty much makes the pricey treadmills useless for users who are not ready to pay for the company’s monthly subscriptions and has further implications of who actually owns the product you paid for in this world of constant subscriptions – especially now that tech companies are comfortable to ban users’ accounts.

Right-wing dissidents should probably avoid internet-connected exercise equipment & appliances. Otherwise, libtech firms could one day block you from using your treadmill, refrigerator, etc for hate speech & wrong-think.

Stop. Connecting. Shit. To. The. Internet.

If it doesn't work without internet, return it.

What the fuck do you expect me to do with my WiFi connected DRM protected subscription based shovel? You're really speaking from a position of privilege here

[–] 4 pts

This is one of the reasons they did that Cash For Clunkers scam.

[–] 0 pt

cause of treadmills ? what?

[–] 7 pts

Computerized cars. Get the ones people can repair themselves that last for decades out of the market.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Peloton is gonna get sued to hell though.

[–] 1 pt

Their O lawyers and accountants probably already ran the numbers/legalese and have come to the conclusion that the risk is worth it. Just like that scene in Fight Club: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiB8GVMNJkE

Goodbye, router!

But the internet, of, you know, the things!

[–] 0 pt

Routers work without internet, actually.

Can someone explain how anyone justifies the $3000 price tag for a treadmill? You can buy a nice one, that's new for under $1000 that doesn't require a subscription, or find a good used one locally for $100 on consignment sites.

[–] 12 pts

1) With the subscription, you have a live aerobics instructor yelling at you. I guess some people are into that. I think the subscription also allows people to do training classes with other people, so you're competing against other live participants, remotely.

2) There seems to be some status snobbery with Peloton / Apple / Louis Vuitton products. The buyers seem attracted to the high price. And if you question whether it's worth it, they arrogantly say shit like "I can afford it. You must be poor".

I've seen the commercials, and they were enough of a deterrent. I don't want to watch some sweaty nigger, and I damn sure am not going to pay for the privilege of having one ook at me personally through a screen. I can always shut the screen door and order delivery fast food if I want that experience.

[–] 1 pt

God I hate those commercials. I bought an elliptical during COVID when my gym closed for a month (not Peloton, nordictrack). I recently googled how to cancel my subscription that it came with, which was free for a year. Now, all I get on YouTube are NordicTrack ads.

"I can afford it. You must be poor".

They can't afford it either if they are making payments.

[–] 0 pt

No, the $40/month subscription is for the live streaming aerobics classes. So people pay $3,000+ for the Peloton device, and then pay $40/month so they can have an aerobics instructor yell at them.

[–] 2 pts

Its called a veblen good, where the perceived value is derived from the high cost.

You win the award for making me learn something today. Or possibly relearning since I took economics classes so long ago and I'm sure they touched on this somewhere.

I've noticed that certain groups of people are very much drawn to these types of goods and that the advertising targeted towards them is extremely effective.

Remember when thots were twatting that they dont respond to text msgs that dont have the apple green check mark or some shit ?

Women and bugmen get incredibly excited at the thought of Product having internet connectivity, no matter how useless. They will pay any markup to have a Smart Product.

[–] 5 pts

It's super duper cool because I can connect my treadmill stats to Facebook to communicate with all my fake friends and show them that I jogged for 30 minutes in my $1,600 apartment while I listen to NPR. I have goals and resolutions and I'm totally like trying super hard to be fit and intellectual, guys.

[–] 0 pt

It's probably just a matter of time before someone makes something really dumb like a bed into a "smart device" and then it gets bricked too.

[–] 3 pts

There already are sensor panels you can place under your mattress for remote monitoring. They're used for elderly and disabled people.

[–] 4 pts

You can buy really nice, barely used treadmills for $200. Source: everyone I've known who's bought a nice treadmill then draped laundry on it for a few years before selling it on Craigslist.

[–] 0 pt

I use the gear in my home gym every day, still drape laundry on it.

[–] 3 pts

Because people are idiots and will pay it. That’s the long and the short of it. I have zero empathy for people that could have just bought a thousand dollar stationary bike and an ipad.

[–] 1 pt

I would think that a gym quality one would be well more than 1000. So, yes, I can think of a reason for a treadmill to be more than 1000. Do I think that applies to the Peloton? No

The Peloton looks like a PoS -- I have not reason to believe it's not -- and it apparently eats children.

[–] 0 pt

It's the dyson of exercise equipment.

[–] 0 pt

I have to agree on that. My gf brought one of their vacuums. It has like all these settings, but even the turbo setting uh doesn't suck enough.

[–] 1 pt

You could also just go for a walk around the block. If there's a high school nearby, they probably have a track that you can use if the school isn't using it or in session.

[–] 3 pts

I just stopped caring about the kind of morons who buy these products. They are mostly hedonistic, childless professionals throwing their money away. Sell them the moon for all I care.

[–] 3 pts

Never buy an electric car either. That thing will never actually be yours no matter how much you pay.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Couldn't justify the price of their bikes either. You can get a trainer and a nice 'real' bike and be way better off. Glad I avoided this trash company.

[–] 0 pt

You can get a top of the line mountain bike for way less than $3,000.

I paid under 1000 for a nice used bike and got a wahoo smart trainer for like 700. I love it. Can do trainerroad or zwift in the winter and pull it off the trainer to ride outside whenever I want.

[–] 0 pt

If you keep up on the maintenance that bike will last you a very long time.

[–] 1 pt

The headline is a lie. They've made those accounts free in the interim while they find a way to push the update without the account. But if you think that won't happen you can turn in your treadmill for a full refund.

[–] 1 pt

Why would anyone buy this? Morons.

[–] 1 pt

Peloton owners: ZOMG! What will I do now that I can't Just Run?

Me: looks outside

[–] 1 pt

Outside:

Summer 80F with 80+ humidity Winter: 20F with snow & ice everywhere.

This is why my various family had exercise equipment. My grandmother's exercise bike lasted 40 year before my Uncle took & broke it in the less than five.

[–] 0 pt

Your gramma probably weighs half what your uncle does as well.

[–] 0 pt

Keep buying crap connected to the fucking internet you idiots, keep letting other people dictate how you live your life.

Fucking retards.

Theres more than one way to get that motor going... Open her up and start bypassing the bullshit.

[–] 0 pt

Ha,ha,ha. Wow, there is a fool born every minute and all these buyers just proved it.
