short answer: managers who aren't & can't
I love WFH and I doubt I'll go back to non-WFH jobs but I am definitely less productive. I absolutely fucking hate zoom meetings all the time. It's not as good as being in the same room.
I've been working from home for years. I have developed good habits and am as productive as I ever was in the office. Even if you factor in the time I'm online here. Zoom, Teams, etc, are a poor substitute for in-person meetings but you can mitigate that a bit by keeping the number of attendees to the bare minimum.
keeping the number of attendees to the bare minimum
I think that is key.. All the team and company meetings are near worthless but the other developers will jump on a call any time with 1-3 of us. That part is almost more productive than even in person pair programming.
I'm personally more productive. But then again I'm a developer and my work is mostly solo and focused, so distractions like other people in an office, excess noise, etc. are worse than the distraction of being able to fuck off and not do work if I so please.
Someone coming over to talk to me while I'm writing code or debugging or testing something is far more distracting and takes longer to retask than e.g., messaging me on Slack about that same thing.
Meetings are a pretty bad time suck, but the whole company is WFH so everyone is conscious of not being stuck in unnecessary meetings and we often re-evaluate whether we need to be in certain meetings to keep the number to a minimum.
Capitalist masters like to watch their slaves.
This is the correct answer. Butts in seats, if they can't see you then you aren't working.
Because of boomer managers who were too stupid to grasp that competent employees work better from home.
