The auto-pilot is driver assist and not unassisted. If they crashed it's because those chose to do so.
or because they believed the bullshit hype and were dumb enough to test it for themselves.

Testing it isn't an issue. Many people defeat the monitoring to force the vehicle to drive itself. Or they passively satisfy the monitoring and don't pay attention. But they are well instructed during purchase and vehicle nagging not to do these things.
These crashes are almost always the driver's fault. I say as almost acknowledging it might not be, though have not found a single instance which was not.
