The demand went through the roof because trainloads of people who didn't give too much of a fuck about computers ended up with only that as entertainment, which doesn't only imply an increase in personal computers/hardware demand, but additional hardware server side to keep up with the sudden ever increasing demand/traffic
And then manufacturers had to update their hardware too to keep up with the demand
