The creation of the energy at a power plant, pushing that energy to the consumer and then converting it is not an environmentally sound strategy if your goal is to limit CO² and ozone.
My goal is energy efficiency. Electric, with transmission and charging losses is up to 80% efficient.
ICE with (powertrain) transmission losses, not including gas production (people always forget), is at best 36% efficient and averages around 32%.
Electric vehicles tend to have much fewer moving parts, are more reliable, and require less maintenance. Vs oil changes every 3-8k, fluid changes every 20k-100k, and so on.
The fact is, only the current battery technology makes EV dirty relative to current vehicles. A change to a cleaner battery chemistry can completely change that. And guess what, all current technology efforts are heading in this direction.
Did you even know they have battery technology which is extremely clean and doesn't use rare, hard to find or process minerals? But it's about the intersection of a variety of factors. Including charge rates and cycles, weight, bulk, total capacity, mass production capacity, in addition to cold weather performance. They have many factors and they are steadily being checked off.
When newer chemistries become available, EVs will easily be cleaner than ICE.
