It is simply used to generate power / conduct heat, and then allowed to continue to flow freely down stream.

NO! The machines absorb every drop, breaking it all down into hydrogen and oxygen and then crunching those atoms into subatomic particles!! THEY ARE SO BADS!!!

Tone of the article makes it seem like they are using run to waste systems. The ones I have worked in use glycol mix through the CRACs to cool the floors then to the cooling tower where it gets reused. The water consumption during the electrical generation is more of a comment on how we use water to generate electricity and not a direct reflection on data centers consuming water.
