The problem with modular laptops (and smartphones) is that they're always either very low end, like the Olimex TERES-I (olimex.com) or extremely pricey like this one.
I like the idea, but in order to be a viable, affordable solution there needs to be more standardization for replacement parts. Instead of some startup putting a product on the market from time to time and disappearing a few years later, there should be some kind of consortium that agrees on open source standards.
