Chromebooks are gigantic piles of shit

[–] 4 pts

Just a mobile phone in a larger case.

the only half assed reason to buy one would be to install a clean linux distro over it but the hardware is not even worth the trouble.

I ran a chromebook for about a semester's worth of CS work. It was nice and small, but keeping it charged so it didn't shit itself and require a re-install of the one linux distro that worked on it was a pain.

They are, but I've suggested them to some people just because they were too stupid to use a regular computer.

Expect more from people. If everyone always takes the easy way out it forms a downward spiral.

You're free to provide the tech support for these retards.

ChrimeOS - great, more data for google.

Are these figures legit? I can honestly say i dont know anyone that uses chrome OS, Not one person.

reading the bottom of the article it starts to make sense, Kids, Kids are given a chrome book for school....

Those slimey bastards at google...

They probably are, they have massive adoption in .edu. I have a few clients that use them as well.

Chrome OS is popular in schools, so it has a disproportionate market share, kind of like Apple did back during the IIe/IIc days - schools loved them, so there were a lot of them "out there."

I have some family members that gave their kids a Chromebook, because they don't know enough to keep a real machine free of cruft, and the kids aren't smart enough not to fuck them up. Chromebook you just wipe and go. I am sincerely considering getting one for my father, because he's the same way. All he needs is a browser Jootoobs.

Don't do it. It will give more power to Google.

He's already using Jewgle pretty much exclusively.

ChromeOS at schools would definitely account for the decrease in MacOS popularity. Every school I went to growing up, Elementary through High School, had Apple products. If half of those machines were replaced with ChromeBooks, Apple would take a huge hit. ChromeBooks are much cheaper than Apple alternatives; so, considering that they are both shit OSs, it makes sense just to go with the ChromeBooks.

Only good chromebook is one running linux

I wish there were more direct-to-linux notebook options with ARM core processors. I know you can install Linux on a Chromebook, but that seems to be somewhat of a pain and if you fuck up then you've destroyed the device.

I'd love a "chromebook" from the manufacturer that had Debian pre-installed. I guess the Pinebook is about the only thing that comes close to this, but that's seemed like a hit or miss proposition since they came out.

Why does that seem hit or miss? I know they've been backordered but i haven't heard anything about crap units being delivered.

Some seem to have problems like dead pixels, and the better support (at least a while back) was through Armbian.

I will admit it's been a while since I looked, so they may be better now.

ChromeOS sucks. Being a part of Google is another reason to avoid it.

Was sure it was going to say Linux. What the fuck is wrong with people? It's free retards.

Linux is really far too fragmented for the desktop market. ChromeOS is like sugar, it's easy (empty) calories.

I'm guessing that since this survey specifically refers to "desktop," it didn't include the bajillion Pi and Pi-likes out there.

While linux is free, it's not convenient to use for day to day activities for an average person.

I'm in IT so maybe I've lost my perspective, but it seems to me that distros like Ubuntu aren't that much different than Windows.

I have used Ubuntu, both Desktop, and Server. Linux is very good for servers, but for an average user it's not really user friendly. Lack of friendly software, lack of support to video games, lack of support to drivers.
