I don't live in the woods and I'm tempted to sign up. My concern is with the stated "periodic" loss of service.

The periodic dropout is only while they're building out the satellite network. Once enough are in orbit, the service will be continuous. Those further North (or South) of the equator get better service right now due to the way orbits work. That better service will drift closer to the equator as the satellite count increases.

I assumed that was the case but since I work remotely I need reliable service.

I'm further South, so must also wait for the full service to reach my latitude. But once it's here I'll jump at the chance to disconnect from my local service provider.

Its called the "better than nothing beta" for a reason. :D but in all seriousness, the hardware tracks and tells you how much downtime it experiences. Right now, downtime due to no sats overhead is usually very low (minutes a day or less), but the "beta" downtime has fluctuated a bit more for people as they take time to set up their terrestrial ground stations and networks. In just a month or two, I'd imagine that downtime for stuff like that will be all but gone.

Currently, Some still report drop outs on things like video calls or other very time sensitive applications that won't tolerate downtime to the tune of 10-20 seconds, but that should also get a lot better in the very near future
