Why ARM went with a licensing model instead of controlling production directly will never cease to amaze me. They have left tons of money on the table for years. $418 million revenue in Q1 2020, while billions of devices based on their instruction set are sold.

When they made the first Nintendo DS deal they should have raised money and opened a fab then. Sad.

Because there's little money in fabrication and because the only place to do it is not-in-the-UK. I posit that ARM would not be the dominant IP if it hadn't gone to a licensing model.
