MIDI is alive and well, friend. I use it all the damn time. It's the back-bone of PC-based music production.

Stigma around the format is just bullshit, any complaints about it can be addressed to my hole. The whole thing with electronic music is the sound design above all else really, and with the quality of samples you can get these days, most orchestral stuff on TV these days are cues recorded with sampled instruments. MIDI is just super versatile, one of the only things in music tech that isn't massively complex

True, but for the average user? None of them know what midi is.

Anyone that works in sound/music production uses MIDI all the time. Many of the (musical) keyboards you see are actually MIDI controllers.

It's like asking someone who doesn't mess with photography/digital art "what happened to .psd files"?

I believe that the average user never needed MIDI, except when there wasn't free music and you could play back MIDI files.
