Some simply have no choice, they either have commiecast or they have no service.
They could always tether from their work cell phone like I did for a few years there. That was pretty sucky, honestly, but I was not going back to shitty cable, and I didn't want to pay to be spied on by AT&T, the only service choices at that time here, aside from dumb satellite, which would still be AT&T up.
There's always some kind of alternative if you're stubborn and willing to come up with horrible compromises enough! Except for when there's not.
I guess there always is cellular, but that's not really an option if you want to do any gaming or video online. Service in the USA just generally sucks overall.
It's a terrible option for video and gaming. I went down to the marina and just hoped their shitty wifi worked for the times when I had to be in a meeting with video for whatever reason, and that worked out okay, luckily. Gave me a chance to drink beer during meetings [when the camera 'malfunctioned'] for a change!
