My problem isn't getting a linux distro installed onto a thumbdrive, the challenge is running it.

With windows 8 and 10 I think you need to disable quick boot and secure boot.

Ok, so just to confirm. Head to the bios(?) and disable quick boot and secure boot.

Would I be able to then install a Linux distro by means of flash drive that way as well? I've only been able to pull it off by disc.

Yes USB should work after you disabled them.

I just leave it run on the USB and don't bother putting it on the computer. That way, with a handful of USB sticks, I have the option to run whichever type of linux I want and it leaves no trace on the computer when I'm done.
