Asteroid mining might be practical, actually; more practical than trying to colonize the moon or Mars IMO, since you don't have a gravity well to move things out of to bring here. There are more than a few technical hurdles to doing so though.
Instead, we're talking about the moon and Mars, both of which would be money pits for much longer.

It's possible to make this world a better place and encourage exploration of the unknown. Of course, it isn't possible if you are uneducated and unmotivated, but I think that's a rant for a better sub.

It's not so much Fake as it is Gay, anything that distracts you from having children and supporting your community here on earth -- is gay.

If we could sustainably colonize unhabitable areas, why don't we have sustainable colonies in the depths of Antarctica? It's warmer than mars, has more water and a breathable atmosphere.
Outside of the earths magnetosphere you will get pelted by so much radiation you wouldn't make it very far.
We will probably have artificial intelligence in 50 years that's good enough that we won't need humans in space. Why bother launching smelly needy monkeys?
