Debian is the best, IMHO. If you want to a full time desktop I would suggest Mint and Debian for Servers.

I want to replace my need as much as possible on windows, yes. I have seen mint, but to my understanding is currently not backed by any big money -- fedora has IBM; ubuntu has Canonical; openSUSE has SUSE, etc. that seems dicey to rely on something that could disappear.

I don't have a huge Linux background and for me Ubuntu has met all of my needs. @RobertJHarsh can you elaborate on how Ubuntu is not a full desktop?

I didn't say it was not a full desktop. I just prefer Mint. Yes, Ubuntu is Debian based but [adjusting tin foil hat] it's pretty fucking suspect that Microsoft uses Ubuntu in his WSL and other products plus there has been plenty speculation that Ubuntu has had a lot of Chinese funding and support. This was news before M$ went down the linux road. I think if Microsoft built it's own Linux distro (Microsoft Linux) it would never get any usage because if M$' constant lying, building in backdoors for the government, and doing fucky things with standards. Like it's failed Java Machine and not using RFC compliant LDAP or RADIUS, for example.
