I always hated that Tom Sawyer character. I thought Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) portrayed him from a liberal (Marxist) point of view. If any of us kids (including Huck Finn) would have encountered an asshole like that, we would have tossed him into the muddy waters. Sam Clemens was one of the first prolific liberal writers to make his mark on America.

I disagree vehemently with his acceptance of the negro as equal. The nuance of his own words betray his liberal stance.

He knew, from experience, that negroes were inferior, and yet, he went on to author volumes of works promoting the African as equal.

Some of his material written as Clemens was interesting, but he was too liberal with the negro and he had a derogatory view of poor whites. He was an apologist for an inhumane war of aggression against people who should not have been enemies

Slavery would have resolved itself and with a better result in 20-30 years due to industrialization without any bloodshed and the Nation might have been able to deal with the negro problem in an intellectual fashion rather than an emotional one

So many white lives lost to free the savages, no coherent plan to control or repatriate them to their continent, and so many concessions over the years that have just resulted in hostility towards the benevolent saviors
