I remember sitting on the back of our car and watching sunset satelites, with my dad, as a kid. You could see them REAL bright, for just a couple of seconds. I remember we once saw a shooting star at the same time.
Because they moved so differently, and and such different (apparent, at leas) speeds, they seemed to be vastly far apart. It made the entire sky feel so deep. So vast. As if the earth had only been a plane, until I could think of space, and then it became an orb, and space became not a dome, but a great chasm.
I've never had the patience to setup to see a total solar eclipse, but I'm told it feels the same way. Astronomy is such a treasure.
