One of my favorite salads, thank you for sharing! The only difference is in my family we never added fresh onion (we can't tolerate it well, even though it adds great flavor) and usually had herring on the very bottom layer.

Sure, yeah. I wasn't planning to post it, just made it today on a whim while I had another plate unmolested (I ate the other one all on my own lol). This salad is a perfect blend of tastes - sweetness of beet, blandness and soft texture of taters, some crunchiness from onion, salt and umami from fish, and egg, because egg is good. Mayo makes it all work together as well.
