I have ~$7,000 in hand tools alone, another $1,200 in power tools. And like another 1k in jacks and stands and misc stuff.
I rarely buy stuff, and when I do I plan to get my money's worth. I only splurge on food and car stuff. The car does a lot for me so I maintain it the best I can, and food, well...that's your temple.
Clothes last me a long time. I replace shoes like I replace tires on my car. Once the tread is worn out.
Tell me which hand tools you find most useful and use the most. Like I said, I plan on buying more.
My sockets, and ratchets. I have every type of socket and extension.
A hydraulic press is a must, welding equipment, even a cheap mig welder is better than no welding. Drill press is also invaluable. Band saws. Milling machine if you can afford it.
With that if you can cut and measure you can build just about anything you can imagine. The best tools are the ones that let you build stuff from scratch.
Sockets spanners and ratchets are very important but no more important than hammers and screwdrivers.

Spend good money on a non chinese set. I've had mine for 15+ years.
Nice, quality toolboxes are a good investment earlier the better because it seems the prices rise 10% a year. Get a big set, bigger than you than you can imagine using because you'll have it filled up soon enough after things are organized nice and you stop losing tools. I got the big Milwaukee ones when they first came out(not high quality but big) and I regret not buying enough to fill the whole wall.
Here's something else to think about. A barber cuts hair, he doesn't own the barber shop, he rents the chair he works on.
