Call me a noob but I think this needs a bit more detail. At least I need more details here.

Its a standard charcoal water filter in a rain barrel. What more do you need to know?

What's the stuff on the top and on the bottom? How fine is the screen on the bottom to hold everything? And how is it braced to handle all of the weight? And does it need to be 'activated' charcoal?

The top and bottom layers are pebbles or gravel. Even better to have a layer of small river stones on top of the top gravel, but with a net or cloth on top not necessary.
