Call me a noob but I think this needs a bit more detail. At least I need more details here.

Still very helpful and I saved it. But if it could have more detail that would be swell.

Its a standard charcoal water filter in a rain barrel. What more do you need to know?

What's the stuff on the top and on the bottom? How fine is the screen on the bottom to hold everything? And how is it braced to handle all of the weight? And does it need to be 'activated' charcoal?

The top and bottom layers are pebbles or gravel. Even better to have a layer of small river stones on top of the top gravel, but with a net or cloth on top not necessary.

gravel, sand, powdered wood charcoal, sand again, gravel again, all layers separated by fabric (like an old tshirt) and then you need to boil the water.

first run is undrinkable. let it run for some time till the water gets clear. then after every use clean/exchange everything. as long as water is flowing through this, it shouldnt accumulate too many bacteria or funghi, just dont stop the water flowing through it!

Check the output for radiation with a hand held rad detector.

Radioactive rain is a thing.

Fukushima type off gassing leads to radioactive rainfall, (fallout.)

You don't want to be drinking that, filtered or otherwise. It's quite lethal.

A rad detector picks it up easily if it is there.

Normal background rads are 20 to 50. Anything over 100 is very bad news.

That’s cute and all, but you need a way to backwash the sand. This requires pumps and hoses, but at the least, a bunch of manual effort without power.

Yeah except the radiation from the nano asteroids or what ever that landed on the roof all week long, your good.

How long until that thing is just DICKED with algae and bacteria though?

About a week in hot sun. Three to four weeks in the cold.

what is "activated charcoal"? Is it something we can make?

Also, I think diatomaceous earth makes a good stage if you have a supply. Has some other uses as well.

Activated charcoal/carbon is basically just a structural carbon that is highly porous and sponge-like. It has a massive surface area for its volume and can trap other materials and act like a filter. It can remove smells and organic molecules that can make the water taste funny. You can easily make your own activated charcoal from a variety of materials and in pretty large quantities. There are plenty of videos on YT that show the process, but here's one from Cody's Lab (youtube.com) to get you started if you want to do this.

DE is the finest filtration you can achieve. Better than sand. It would need to be in a separate container with a way to transfer the water between barrels. DE works best in a grid system, which needs a pump to circulate the water between the grids.

Edit: water filtration DE is different that agricultural DE, and I’m not sure either should be sprinkled inside a chicken run if that’s what you’re thinking.
