Water filter should be ok... am I missing something?
The specific problem is dirty water will clog the filter quickly. You'd want to pre filter the water, get a 5 gal bucket, put a hole the bottom and cover it with cloth, char coal, then sand. This can quickly filter water before your good filter, making the longevity of the filtration much better.
That's a damn good idea and if the water mains go out I will certainly do that!
Where do you plan on filtering from? Pitcher filters arent good unless the water is relatively safe to begin with. Sawyer filters are probably the best bang for the buck. I myself have several different ones, now lifestraws suck but the lifestraw family one isnt bad. Of course for taste you have to add a charcoal filter for it to run thru after filtering.
The filter is this one specifically and is rated for 99.999% filtration of all metals, bacteria and viruses. My source of water is the well in my backyard which is, tbqh, very high on heavy metal content.

That particular filter is slow as fuck btw, a single pitcher takes between 30 to 45 minutes. Tastes good though and is worth the wait.
if your happy with it be sure to stock extra filters, that one doesnt last to long comparatively.
