Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a set handy?

Prices are all over the place and the cheaper ones are sold as kid toys. How much should one spend for something with decent reliability and battery life and encrypted calls?

There was much interest in this lately in local forums, and I saw the Midland G7 was recommended in terms of autonomy, reception and reliability and the local resaler was highly appraised for providing excellent support (don't know if this is the case with Midland resalers worldwide). A pair goes for around 150 here, while the Cobras can be had for 40 for a decent model.
