Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a set handy?

Prices are all over the place and the cheaper ones are sold as kid toys. How much should one spend for something with decent reliability and battery life and encrypted calls?

Any experiences with the Cobra brand sold at Walmart?

Learn HAM Radio. Getting Technician level is really easy.

Lame.

Proper VHF radios would be more useful. Also, only faggots shop at walmart.

Arent there walkie talkie models that use the VHF spectrum as well?

Oh. I guess yeah. Duh.

But there can be more than two participants making it more than just two-way communication. I have been meaning to get one of those because then the missus could still hail me on the boat even if the phone system goes down.

There was much interest in this lately in local forums, and I saw the Midland G7 was recommended in terms of autonomy, reception and reliability and the local resaler was highly appraised for providing excellent support (don't know if this is the case with Midland resalers worldwide). A pair goes for around 150 here, while the Cobras can be had for 40 for a decent model.
