Jesus understood the exact purpose of a sword. A sword is not just a big kitchen knife. It was a very common weapon of war, it's very design was optimized expressly for the purpose of efficient killing in close personal combat. At that time a sword would have had no other purpose than up close personal defense and was very commonly carried for exactly that purpose. No one at that time would have looked at a man carrying a sword and been confused as to it's purpose.

The founders understood evolution of technology. Evolution of war. The civilians usually had better rifles at that time as well. So the concept that I shouldn't have what the Military has is absurd.
If everyone has fire power, people are less opt to use it knowing everyone else has the same or better. Any threats are easily quelled by quick responses of those armed around the threat.
