Fun fact: Despite the DOD having plenty of checks and codes and controls already, Congress demanded that each nuke have its own code that had to be entered for the device to armed. Military said that it was unnecessary, and in fact dangerous, because it's another thing to keep track of after you've ALREADY gotten an authentic launch code. Congress said do it anyway.
