Why did he keep it?
Because Michael and Barry had a seriously passionate sexual relationship. Without the penis, Michael alludes to how he wouldn't be able to satisfy himself or his partner. Their adopted children knew about it and then they developed drug addictions and depression.
He also metaphorically explains why he is and then was "Big" Mike.
That's kinda outrageous. I'm not willing to buy the book to find out so I guess I'll take your word for it!
It's cloaked in symbolism and I skimmed through; just look at the title, it's blatant what the message is if you read a few chapters. I left the bookstore because I was asked to buy or leave and I wasn't going to support a black power, transsexual book about radical socialism and his upbringing.
