I haven't heard it attributed to NYT or Maggie but I have heard that Trump decided against a new Party. Instead he wants to focus on MAGA Republicans to oust GOPe / RINO people from their Congressional seats. There's probably a lot better chance of getting rid of the fake people in primaries than to split the ticket and let Dems take everything.
