A lot of posts and comments I've read say it is because you have downvoted stuff that isn't spam. Apparently on here you aren't supposed to downvote things you don't like or disagree with only things that are spam and stuff.

A few days ago, we discussed some ideas for a downvote alternative button. and said they already had some ideas in the works. They seem very open to the idea of a way to downvote as long as it doesn't bury comments/threads, and doesn't give assholes the ability to shit on people's overall score at the site simply because they disagree with them.
I don't know how it will work out in the end, but admin is not totally closed off to suggestions. Big plus in my book.

Multiple accounts gaming votes, down vote brigading, lots of shady stuff will trigger the algorithm. Stop being shady and it will go away.
