My spouse and I are going to update our will soon on the off chance we die in a freak accident. All of the major things are straightforward. Relative X is the executor, Relative X gets everything, see attached list of assets and where to find them. We assume Relative X would estate sale everything and fly home with a check.

However, we do have some possessions which would be too valuable to throw out, not estate sale friendly, and not something Relative X would want to transport a great distance back home. E g. A couple grand in bottles of scotch, a couple hundred bottles of wine in racks, firearms, etc.

Are there any gotchas to attaching an addendum to the will to the effect of "This non-binding addendum is solely a suggestion. Relative X, everything is yours. If you dont want the scotch, wine, or firearms, here's the contact info for a local friend for each who'll be happy to show up with a trailer, box that stuff up, and get it off your hands."

Is this a good idea? Bad? Why?

Speak to your relative before your death. If they respect you then they will follow through. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have current names, addresses and phone numbers of your friends in the will so your relative would have access to that info in case they decide they can't take those items. It will make it easier on them during an already stressful time.

Ultimately, even with suggestions and having your recommendations, it will come down to the character of who you are leaving everything to.

It also can't hurt to add your friends in the will. Something along the lines of I want to leave all this for my relative, but if not interested it should go to this friend. I'm no attorney so won't pretend to know the legalese.

I completely understand this and am not worried about their character. It's entirely me trying to make their life easier for items I expect them to look at and say "WTH do I do with this?" If they want it, cool. If they dont, here's someone they can call who'll happily show up the same day and solve the conundrum for them.

Then just at the names and numbers. That should be more than enough.
