Backing up your PC used to be a trivial process if you had a good QIC-40/80 tape drive and backup software. I used to back up my entire HDD including the OS! That was the ultimate way to test out some new sketchy hardware or software and be able to recover back to normal operations if things went south. The tapes were a little pricey, but I got most of mine free from work so I can't complain.

About 10 years ago I remember hearing that tape drives were still in use in some places for nightly, full disk backups. They’re apparently cheap and quite fast for backup up or restoring a large batch of data all at once.

Yes tape drives still exist and I have used modern ones, but they are plagued with problems. The tapes expensive for their limited lifetime. The drivers and software are a nightmare. They're just not worth it for non-business use.
