Skype was always a bolt-on that MS bought from eBay and investment bankers after eBay bought it thinking that buyers and sellers want to talk to each other on a platform that requires no interaction to complete transactions. The only time Skype wasn't a bastard child was those first few years when it was just a peer-to-peer voice call system with some extra features.
