There's still an ABB XY recorder laying around here, which we used to record RFI levels in combination with a Schwarzbeck RFI receiver. All analog and very prone to drift when getting up to operational temp. It's claim to fame was its electrostatic backplate to hold the paper. @stupidbird

HP loved photostuffs. The old nixie tube equipment used neon bulbs on photoresistive plates to generate the logic for the tubes.

It's both magic and science.
