Quite interesting, it was basically a reel to reel in cassette form. The guy seems very smart to be able to take that apart and fix.

I don't know exactly what that is. It looks like a Nema 1-15p non-polarized plug used for the mains over here.

I've had some success using MEK (methyl-ethyl ketone) for similar cleanups. Wear gloves and do it outside. Barring that, denatured ethanol. Either of those should work much better than kitchen degreaser, but I'd say from experience MEK would probably do it better than denatured ethanol.
