I got a new thermostat just 4 months ago and is a the dumbest one on the market. Not even programmable. That is the one I had before and it died. On occasion I get mail from those yo-yos telling to get a smart thermostat and they'll knock off so much per month.

Mine is a Lux TX from 1998. Programmable, but that's it. I have three more in the closet, new in pack, just in case.

Horder.

Had new furnace and AC installed in 2022 - stipulated I didn't want a "smart" thermostat. Installer brought out a dumb digital unit - said it was more sensitive than the old mercury switch unit it replaced. However he put my old thermostat in the new unit's box, returned it to me and said to hang onto it - said the mechanical tech it uses is almost foolproof and "You never know what they have in mind". He knew.

By that they mean they'll knock off so much heat.

One of the comments suggests a work-around that might have merit - at least for a while...

Well, here's what a real American would do in that situation. Buy or otherwise acquire an old manual thermostat. Install it. If part of the law says that you have to have a "smart" thermostat, sure. Use their unit, too. Just don't hook it up to your HVAC, but keep it active. A big middle finger to the traitors that authored that bill.

That's the day I set the WiFi network in the house to local only with no internet connection.

Connect to no unit and pit in the attic.

Too cold. This thing is going to register 150F before I'm done with it.

More power to the corporations will surely turn things around.
