This happened to my wife, only the flaming grease got down inside the stove below the burner. She started screaming and fluttering around. I came as fast as I could down the stairs and did two things:

  1. Put a cover over the burner.
  2. Turned off the burner.

The thick, thick smoke locked under the cover quickly killed the fire inside the stove. The only casulties -- the stainless steel cover got soot stains baked into it that took weeks to wash off; the dog, which ran outside into the yard while the fire alarm was shrieking and my wife was screaming (she opened the door to let out some of the smoke), is still terrified every time he hears a beeping noise.

Yeah, I got a new stove. Glass top.
