Going by her reaction... the single mother surely didn't see it coming, holy shit that was *great.* Well-timed and well-delivered; she can't claim that the guy was being malicious. He cleverly made it into a "genuine" inquisition. This is why she was so stunned- if he had said "Well, I'd love to know what your niglet's father has to say about this, but we all know he isn't around! Nyuk nyuk!", then she could claim outrage and victim status. But when posed as a simple question, she had to think about it. And it clearly *hurt* her. In that moment, she briefly considered "I'm not wanted by at *least* one man, even though I gave him a child". That has to fucking hurt.
